Magic Kingdom is testing a new rider swap procedure at TRON Lightcycle Run and Space Mountain that allows families with children under the height requirement to walk through attraction queues together. The change means families no longer need to split up at the entrance, with one adult waiting outside whilst the other queues with qualifying children.
How Does the New Rider Swap System Work?
Under the new system, entire families can enter the queue together regardless of whether all children meet the height requirements. When the party reaches the loading area, one adult boards the attraction whilst the other adult and children under the height requirement wait in a designated indoor area.
The procedure is not mandatory. Families can still choose the traditional approach of having one adult wait outside the attraction entrance if they prefer. Those who opt for outside waiting still receive a Lightning Lane pass for the waiting adult.
Which Attractions Offer Internal Rider Switch?
Currently, only TRON Lightcycle Run and Space Mountain offer this internal rider swap option. Cast members at TRON confirmed the change is still being tested, whilst Space Mountain cast members indicated they intend to keep the new procedure permanently.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train occasionally allows internal rider switching at the end of operational days, but this is not a standard procedure. Other Magic Kingdom attractions do not currently permit internal rider swap for guests under height requirements.
What Are the Benefits for Families?
The new procedure addresses a common frustration for families visiting the parks. Previously, one adult would need to wait outside with children who couldn't ride, missing the themed queue experience entirely.
Now families can stay together through the queue, allowing all members to enjoy the pre-show elements and theming that are integral to many Disney attractions.
When Will These Changes Become Permanent?
The exact implementation date for these procedures remains unconfirmed. Disney has not announced whether the testing will expand to other attractions throughout Magic Kingdom or the wider Walt Disney World resort.
The specific locations of the designated indoor waiting areas have also not been detailed, though they are situated near the attraction loading areas.
