Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will reopen on 3rd May 2026, following the removal of construction walls on 1st May that had surrounded the attraction for over a year.
The walls that previously extended from the front of the main attraction space to the entrance of Tiana's Bayou Adventure have now been replaced with rolling planters. Cast members are currently stationed in front of these planters whilst the attraction remains closed ahead of its confirmed reopening date.
When did the Big Thunder Mountain construction walls come down?
Disney removed the construction barriers on 1st May 2026, just two days before the attraction's scheduled return to operation. The previous wall signage had indicated the closure was indefinite, reading "Notice Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Closed! Until Further Notice by Order of Barnabus T. Bullion".
The temporary planters now blocking access to the attraction entrance suggest Disney is managing the final preparations before welcoming guests back to the runaway mine train coaster.
What caused the year-long Big Thunder Mountain closure?
The specific reason for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's extended closure remains unconfirmed. Disney has not disclosed what refurbishments or improvements were undertaken during the lengthy downtime.
It is also unclear whether testing is currently taking place on the attraction ahead of the 3rd May reopening, though the presence of cast members and the removal of construction walls suggests final preparations are underway.
How does this affect Magic Kingdom guests?
Park visitors will regain access to one of Magic Kingdom's popular attractions after more than a year without the option to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The attraction's return adds another major ride option to Frontierland alongside the recently opened Tiana's Bayou Adventure.
Guests planning Magic Kingdom visits from 3rd May onwards can once again include the mine train coaster in their park plans. The timing coincides with the busy spring travel season when additional attraction capacity is particularly valuable.
The Big Thunder Mountain reopening on 3rd May 2026 marks the end of Magic Kingdom's longest closure of the attraction in recent memory, restoring full access to Frontierland's signature coaster experience.
